{"id":21,"date":"2023-09-11T21:40:41","date_gmt":"2023-09-11T21:40:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mjw.ua.edu\/?page_id=21"},"modified":"2025-12-03T16:30:08","modified_gmt":"2025-12-03T16:30:08","slug":"what-is-mjw","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/mjw.ua.edu\/?page_id=21","title":{"rendered":"What is MJW?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>For over 40 years, the Alabama Scholastic Press Association (ASPA) has hosted MJW for high school media students from across the United States.<\/strong><span style=\"font-family: -webkit-standard; font-size: medium; white-space: normal;\"><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-white-color has-cyan-bluish-gray-background-color has-text-color has-background\"><strong>WHY MJW?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-vivid-red-color has-text-color\">Summer Workshop<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:400\">While still in high school, 10 to 15 students are selected to attend an intensive workshop held in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, each summer. The workshop emphasizes multimedia reporting, writing, editing, graphics, photography, production and basic communication skills. Participants&#8217; work will be printed in the &#8220;MJW Journal&#8221; and showcased on the MJW website to display what they&#8217;ve learned.&nbsp;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-vivid-red-color has-text-color\">Recruiting and Follow-Up<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:400\">Through a partnership with ASPA, offices at The University of Alabama, and other high school media organizations, we stay in touch with scholastic publications, advisers and workshop graduates as they continue their media careers into college and into the professional workforce. <\/h4>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-vivid-red-color has-text-color\">Professional Mentors<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:400\">MJW&#8217;s resident workshop faculty is augmented by journalists from around the state and nation, so every student has an editor\/coach. Many of these mentors stay in touch with their assigned youngsters throughout the year and &nbsp;into their careers.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-vivid-red-color has-text-color\">Lab Newspaper, Online&nbsp;and&nbsp;Broadcast<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:400\">The workshop is hands-on from the first day. Students conduct interviews with newsmakers in Alabama cities, towns and communities then go on to produce news stories, video, social media, photos, and feature packages (for broadcast and print\/online).
