Since its inception in 1984, the Multicultural Journalism Workshop (MJW) at The University of Alabama has served as a recruitment program, offering high school students from all backgrounds across the country a pathway into journalism and media careers. Open to all aspiring storytellers, MJW helps students develop essential skills while learning how to report on and cover multicultural communities.
During the immersive 10-day program, participants live in UA dorms and sharpen their abilities in reporting, writing, editing, design, and photography. Through hands-on experiences such as field trips to historical sites in Tuscaloosa and the Black Belt region, along with lectures from media professionals, students produce multimedia content on real deadlines, preparing them for future success in journalism.
