Ready to apply to MJW?!
Here’s a few things you need to get ready before applying:
1. A completed 2026 application. Applications for the 2026 short will open on January 1, 2026.
2. An official transcript of grades and standardized test scores. If you do not have any test scores yet, please just submit your transcripts for the past two semesters.
3. A typed, 500-word essay explaining your interest in journalism. Include at least 100 words about your interest in journalism in an increasingly diverse society.
4. Attach scanned PDFs of three (3) writing samples of published stories, articles or web links to broadcast work. Brief unpublished manuscripts or broadcast scripts are also acceptable.
5. A list of school and community activities and work experience.
6. A signed recommendation from a principal, teacher, guidance counselor or media professional on an official organization letterhead.
IMPORTANT NOTES
Students entering 9th grade through their freshman year of college, from all backgrounds and locations, are eligible to attend the Multicultural Journalism Workshop. You don’t need to be an Alabama resident to apply! The program is free and provides housing, meals, field trips and top-tier, immersive instruction from industry professionals.
Transportation to and from Tuscaloosa is the student’s responsibility, including all airfare.
If you are flying into the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport, we will arrange to pick you up.
